THE ART OF REVISING:
WRITE A STORY THROUGH REVISION
How to Make It Better

  • Get hands-on practice and learn the art of revising.
  • Watch our stories emerge, deepen, shift, and find their full expression and power.
  • Start from scratch and, layer by layer, learn how to build key ingredients into your tale.
  • Craft the most compelling story.

Whether you're working on a short story, memoir, essay, or novel chapters--or don't know where to begin--The Art of Revising will teach you how to build and finish a compelling story. We'll start together from a true life event. Each week, we'll focus on key story elements (characterization, point of view, symbolism, structure, conflict, theme, and more) that are essential to story development. You'll learn how to shape your story into something that engages readers--and allows its true beauty and truth to shine.

Layer by layer, you'll get better and better.

FAQs
  • How is this class different from the Wed Workshops or Sunday Style Studio classes? Great question! Simply, the goals are different: find your voice and style (Sunday Style Studio sessions); up your storytelling game (Wed night workshops and Story Bootcamps); and learn how to not only write but revise and finish one excellent writing piece (The Art of Revising). The Seabury Hall Wednesday night workshops & Story Bootcamp focus deeply on story development and learning best practices that you can apply to any kind of writing. Those classes dive deep into story elements and structure. They help students understand how to frame a story, begin a story, and keep it interesting. They also help writers train their eyes, ears, and senses as a storyteller. We look at great work and cover so much ground in literature and storytelling! The Sunday Style Studio sessions help writers "try on" the elements of great work. Using many different types of expression, we use a unique studio method to improve a writer's style and find their voice. This is valuable work throughout the career of a writer, similar to Actor's Studios for performers. Like each of these classes, we seek to help writers "sustain wonder" (Robert Hass). In the intensive Art of Revising workshop we work together as writers to build and reflect on one original piece throughout the entire six weeks. You'll learn how professionals manage their time and weave key elements of story by doing it with your own piece. If taken with the Editing or Publishing Bootcamps, you'll complement the skills you've built. You'll leave with essential tools on how to edit, revise, and ready work for publication--skills you can bring to any type of writing work. While also--always--upping your storytelling game. Layer by layer.
